As Nora talks about her growing up in her house, she tells about two things that she did that let her know she was not normal. Tell us about one of them. What reaction do you think her parents will have to her report card.
Have you ever been disappointed in a report card or maybe extremely proud? Tell us about a time when you or someone you know has brought home a report card. If you prefer, tell us about a time that you imagine happening when you brought home all A’s or D’s. Exaggerate if you like.

Nora knew she wasn’t normal because she could fix a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle by her self without a mistake at the age 1. Nora also Knew she wasn’t normal because already knew how to read when she was little even when her brother was in kindergarden, but she didn’t want to tell her parents because she don’t want them to stop reading to her.

Nora Rowley knew she was not normal when she learned that she could read the British almanac before kindergarten, an advanced level book. When her brother i believe who was in kindergarten could not even read yet. Nora knew that if Todd could not read yet and she could, that meant she was smarter than normal kids. Nora then found out that she had to keep her intelligence a secret. That is how Nora learned that she was different.
Have you ever thought you learned something before everyone else did? Did you share it with everyone else or did you keep it a secret? Why?
Nora did two thins that made her realize she was not normal. One of them is, When Nora was watching her sister do a puzzle. Nora analizes the pieces and finds the one piece that fits. Anne, her sister leaves and Nora puts the whole puzzle together. It took Nora very little time to put it together. Nora completed the puzzle with no help. Anne had help from Nora. This is how Nora found that she was not normal.
I think Nora’s parents will over react and will flip when they see Nora’s grades.
her parents might give a big lecture about how Nora should do her best and not slack.
If I brought home all As my mom and dad would be so empressed they might even brag about how hard I worked and how smart I am.
Why is it important to do your best?
Do you think it is important to do your best in school?
Nora thinks that she is different because when she was an infant Nora finished a puzzle. That took a longer time for her sister Anne to figure it out then she did. Later she explains when she was still young she could read a higher level books and actually read when todd just first learned how to read.
I Nora’s parents will be disappointed to hear about her grades. I think they will be angry but never flip out and just punish her for no reason other wise.
If i brought great grades home from school i think my parents would be very happy. He also would probably tell me to keep doing my best and keep up the grades.
I think always doing your best is very important. I try!
One thing that Nora does that lets her know she is not normal is, she learns to read even before kindergarten. Not only can she read but she can read very advanced level books. She decides not to tell anyone because, her brother who is in kindergarten has trouble reading and she doesn’t want to be abnormal.
I have already read this book, but I first thought that her parents would ask her what went wrong, ground her, and get her a very ugly and mean tutor.
Why did you think Nora’s parents would be mad?
One of the things that Nora did that let her know that she was not normal is that when she was a little baby, her older sister was doing a puzzle and was having trouble with it. Nora then quickly and easily picked out the next few pieces of the puzzle and gave them to her sister.
What I think Nora’s parents reaction will be to her report card is shocked and disippointed. Then they might enlist Nora into tutoring.
Describe how Nora’s sister feels and why. What do you think her is bothering her the most? Nora’s intelligence or not being the center of attention? Give a reason from the story if you can that makes you think that might be true or a personal story.
