Ms. Bynes, the librarian, is the one who corners Nora. She tells Nora that she saw the college course and tests she was looking at online. Ms. Bynes knows that Nora is really very smart and that she is failing on purpose. Nora begs her not to tell but we think that Ms. Bynes will tell the other teachers. Some of us think that the other teachers will find out from the school psychologist and the test he is going to give Nora.
Who corners Nora? What is her job? How did she find out about Nora’a activity? Predict what you think will happen in the next chapter.
The person who corners Nora was Mrs. Byrne. She is a librarian and a library teacher. Mrs. Byrne was going to reset the system. She found that one computer, the one Nora uses, was still on. So she went to turn it off, but something caught her eye. She searched around and found everything Nora has been doing.
What we think will happen in the next chapter is Nora will somehow get out of her confrentation.
Which confrontation will she get out of? She has at least three going on in this part of the book. You can write a better prediction. Think creatively. Good explanation of Mrs. Byrne and her role in the story.
Thank you for the constructive criticism. It helped us make our answer sound better.
In response to your constructive criticism, we know there are multiple confrontations. Nora was confronted by Mrs. Byrne. She found out that Nora was really smart and was reading at college level. She was looking up answers to the CMT.
Another confrontation is that she is also a little confused with herself. She wonders if she should still act “average” or be her real self. At the end of the chapter, she is not sure if she could ask someone to help her with her plan. We think that she is leaning towards someone to help her.
Excellent response! I am thrilled you are using this blog. I am curious to know if you are the Garnet Elem in PA. If so, you have a very nice school.
I would love to have you continue using this blog if you like it enough. I think it would be great to have other students to discuss the book with. I haven’t read the book in over a year, so I may forget some of the details. Please remind me of any I may have omitted and include them in your responses. You can ask questions yourself if you or your class has not read too far ahead. Am I speaking to a class, small group, or individual? I would enjoy reading your thoughts about the book and your opinions about the book’s characters. Do you think Nora is making the right decision to fail on purpose? I would love to hear your ideas on either side of the discussion. If you were her at this point, what would you do next? or if this is a class maybe you could vote?
We will email a response to all of your questions at a later date. But we did just complete a quick vote on if we were Nora would we continue on or stop the plan.
Our final results scored:
Fifteen students would continue on with the plan:
We think Nora should continue her plan. Things are going well, she knows her teachers, and how to get around getting in trouble. The end result is not for herself, it is for everybody.
Three students decided they would stop the plan:
We think she could continue, but change her plan of action. Nora could talk with the teachers and express her concerns without getting other students in trouble.
No rush! I am presenting about Internet Safety today, so I can’t say much……However, I am thrilled that each group has decided that change is possible and needed. No one seems to think giving up is the only option. Congratulations! Have a fabulous weekend!
My class was looking forward to hearing a response from you last week and insisted that I tried to blog in this area instead. We just finished The Report Card today. My students are to post an answer to one of the blogs about The Report Card by Wednesday. Below is what we sent on Friday. Hope to hear back from you.

Ms. Rice,
We are from Garnet Valley Elementary School, which is located in PA. I stumbled upon your site a week or two ago and my students have enjoyed blogging on this site. My class consists of 18 students who have enjoyed responding to your questions. We work on your question independently, then read some responses aloud, and finally post a quick blog of what the class all agrees on.
We are currently finishing up the book, but I would like to work with you again in the future. I think blogs are a great way for students to express themselves and discuss their ideas.
We would like to hear back from you with some details about where you are and who are “The Rice Krispie Kids?” Is this blog through only your school district or are the teachers who have blogs from various school districts?
From the students-
What school district and grade do you teach?
What state are you located in?
How do you know GV? Did you work with anyone here before?
Thanks and we look forward to hearing back from you!

I sent you an email today. Hopefully I covered all your questions. I can’t wait to see what you are able to answer back as a class. This blog was just for the kids at my school with the category of The Report Card for those kids who were reading that book. Among the Hidden was another group of kids. It varies from school to school and teacher to teacher as far as blogs go. When will you guys have a blog of your own? Some teachers here have their own, so they can keep parents informed. Others use them for specific purposes like this one. Every school in Irving has a website which is where there is a lot of school information for parents, so some don’t use blogs. I am in charge of our website and am amazed at how much it takes to keep up with it. I have really enjoyed writing back and forth with all of my new friends in PA! Hello from Texas!
I also realized that since it was summer school I didn’t finish publishing all the drafts for the last few chapters. Sorry about that!
